Thoughts as I grow and learn

What’s your 2012 going to look like?

Happy New Year everyone. I hope that you all had a safe holiday season and are now setting up for a great year in 2012.

Having a great 2012 is my plan as well. But instead of starting out the new year with all kinds of resolutions that typically get broken by the end of January, I have changed my focus. At this time of year, you can find a lot of talk about resolutions and goal setting. I have spent time the last few weeks thinking about my goals for 2012 both professionally and personally. But this year, instead of spending my time focused on resolutions and goals, I have decided to try something different. Something that will help me push out of my comfort zone and to grow.

What have I done differently you ask? Well a lot actually but for me it all is derived from one single thing. I read a two part devotional from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) in December where the author talked about picking a ONE word theme for the year. For me it was a new concept and one that frankly got my attention, even though I put it down and went on for several days. But I couldn’t stop thinking about it and found that I was actually praying about it as well. After a week or so, I actually had to go back and get the articles again in order to reread it.

I spent two weeks thinking and praying about what would my word be and as I woke up on January 1 and spent some quiet time reading, thinking about praying, I was given my word. I will not share this word with you because, as the article mentioned, you should only share it with a few very close people that will be able to help you stay accountable. But I did do something a bit different than the author mentioned in the article, I had on old poker chip lying around that I wrote my word on and keep in my pocket. This will help remind me of my word as I go throughout each day. I put it with my billfold, keys and change. I carry it with me, so that anytime I stick my hand in my pocket and feel it there, I am reminded of my word.

Has any of this made a difference? Well it is only the 6th day of January, so it’s not a habit yet, but so far the early returns are looking really good. I have found myself outside of my comfort zone and pushing myself into new things.

I’m excited to see what God wants to reveal to me through this word and for the changes that are coming in my future.

What do you think? What would be your one word theme for the year?
