Self-Improvement: What’s the big deal?
“I learned enough in High School and College, I don’t need to keep learning.” “Why should I read that book?” “Oh that’s just a stupid self-help book.” Ever hear any of these before? Maybe you’ve even thought or said one or more of these statements yourself. Most people would probably be guilty of this at one time or another. Some have seen the error of their ways and are now trying to learn everyday.
But just think that your best knowledge and thinking had gotten you to this point and that the only way to change this is to change. In order to change your future, you have to change the thoughts and actions of the present. I once heard that the definition of insanity is to do something over and over again and expect different results. You have to change something to get a different results.
This is where self improvement and reading come into play. By reading, we can learn from others that have been down the road and are successful. This is the easiest way to break through that barrier and become the person that you really can become.
Now my definition of a self improvement book is a little broader than most people may be thinking of. I would include biographies of famous or successful people into my definition. I do this because I believe that if you read a book with and are asking the question “What can I learn from this book and apply to my life?” then you are reading for self improvement.
So the big deal really is our lives, right? We all want our lives to be better, because I doubt anyone is where they want to be. Then why not give yourself the best shot by making changes in your actions and thinking.
Already doing this? Why not share in the comments about your favorite book or what you are currently reading.

Just today I wrote a blog about the concept of “Believe in Yourself” from a biblical perspecitve. I have written other posts about self-improvement as it relates to Christ’s command to ‘deny yourself; pick up your cross and follow me.”
