The Nook experience from my perspective!
I received a Nook as a Christmas Present from my Mother-in-Law, she’s the best. I wanted to blog about it but felt like I wanted to give it a trial first. Well, last night I finished my first eBook on it, so now I can write about it.
For those of you that don’t know, the Nook is the new eReader that Barnes & Noble (B&N) brought out for the Christmas Holidays. There have been delays in receiving them due to the demand level. I was to receive mine Christmas Eve, but due to weather it was delayed until the following Monday.
Once I received the Nook, and got it out of the package, I was all set. Okay, well I had to charge it. But the instructions that came with it said you could use it while it was charging, so I did. I first hooked it up to my PC and transferred a couple of electronic books that I had received in 2009. I also added a few pdf files that I had on my PC that I thought would be better served on the Nook. I did not buy a B&N book until the next morning.
I will admit that I feel that the process of buy online books is easy. Since I knew I was getting the Nook, because she let me which eReader I wanted, I went to the B&N website and had already browsed the ebooks and started a wish list for it. So when I went “shopping” on the Nook, I could choose from my list. The first book that I purchased was Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. The download process to me was very simple and did not take but a minute. After this, I started reading the book and really enjoyed the experience.
I had been reading the online messaging boards and the blogs about the Nook, and was ready to find out for myself. Most of the complaints stemmed from the length of time that it takes to turn on and the delay in turning the pages. My experience with it so far is that I will agree, it may take some time to start up once you shut it down, but the paperwork says that shutting down isn’t necessary unless you aren’t using it. I haven’t turned mine off, instead I do as it says and keep it in sleep mode.
I will admit that there is a delay as the Nook formats a book for you to view and that there is a delay as it turns the page. But it isn’t anything for me to be disturbed by. Here’s my take on this subject. I feel like there are a lot of people out there that are like me and the Nook is their first eReader, so there is nothing for us to compare this to and we just think it’s normal from this format. The complaints that I have heard are from people comparing it to the Kindle. To be honest, I choose the Nook over the Kindle for reasons other than these and in the last couple of weeks, B&N has proven this to be a wise decision.
I have not reviewed all the bells and whistles of the Nook, but I am just getting comfortable with it myself. At this point I am very happy with my Nook and I look forward to reading lot of books on it and would recommend it to anyone who asks me.
