Blog review: Mentor Like Jesus by Regi Campbell with Richard Chancy
As the title indicates, this books theme is about mentoring. However, that is not the only theme of this book. Regi and Richard talk a lot about your faith and how Jesus was a mentor. The book breaks down 11 things about the mentoring program that Regi has been leading for the last 8 years. They explain these areas and relate them to how Jesus taught (mentored) the 12 Disciples. The book does not lay out an exact curriculum for you to follow to be mentored or be a mentor, it does give you an outline of how to set up your own mentoring program.
My reaction to this book is that it is the most powerful book that I have read in 2009. This book challenged me in several areas. The first is about my relationship with Christ. Regi points out that one of his main goals with his program is to see his mentorees have a closer personal relationship with Jesus. This is something that I really want in my life and this book has certainly pushed me to make that happen.
The second area that this book challenged me in was to actually be a mentor and to help others. This is something that I felt mixed emotions about as I read this book. I really felt lead to pray and consider mentoring, but I also feel that I’m not worthy of mentoring in this manner yet. But I do feel that it is something that I will be working toward in the future.
One other area that this book really challenged me in was my relationships. Regi specifically talks about wanting his mentors to have a stronger relationship first with Jesus and then with their wives and families. Again this book spoke with me on this. I want all of those relationships to be stronger more intimate. I’m not saying that my relationships are bad, because I feel that they are already strong, but I want them to be even better. Don’t we all?
I feel that this is a book that all men should read. Each may take something totally different away from it and you may never have the desire to be a mentor or mentoree but this book, I feel, will be worth while for you to read. This book will be near the top of the list of the books that I want my son to read as he gets older.
